“I think I got everythin ’” the blonde muttered as he looked over the collection of herbs and plants.

“Now you just have to follow the instructions dear,” a brunette said as she was busy petting the large Burmese mountain dog.

“Right,” the blonde stated as he looked over to the book he had gotten from the library, “I’ll need to boil some water first,” he noted as he opened the cast iron stove and started to place firewood in.

Hearing noises from the kitchen when she walked in the door, the blonde women grew rather concerned.

Heading that way with a small beagle at her heels, she found her son and his girlfriend in the kitchen, “What are you up to Niro?” she asked.

The boy whipped around, “Mom! I’ma working on making an antidote,” Niro explained.

The women shifted her weight as she crossed her arms, “In MY kitchen?” she asked.

“I was gonna do it outside. . . but I didn’t know where Dad keep the bonfire pots,” Niro noted.

“Right… ” the women stated as she looked over to the girl sitting at the table petting the dogs, “Hello there Yasashi san, please tell me you are going to watch him,” she asked.

“Hello Theresa sama, and yes I will make sure he doesn’t blow up your kitchen,” Yasashi stated with a smile.

“Thank you Yasashi san,” Theresa stated as she grabbed a bowl from the cabinet, “I will be just outside in the garden.

The kitchen better be intact when I return,” she stated as she headed out the back door, both dogs following her out.

“I’m not gonna blow up the kitchen,” Niro grumbled.

“Your track record in the kitchen isn’t the greatest dear,” Yasash stated as she walked over to him.

“That’s only for cooking. This is just boiling herbs and roots,” Niro pointed out.

“Still, we should be careful. I’m just here to help remember?” Yasashi noted.

“Right” the boy nodded as he struck a match to like the wood in the stove, “Alright, so while that is getting started; what else do we need to do?” he asked as he looked to the book.

“Begin by grinding up the roots into a powder and add to the boiling water,” Niro read out loud.

“Do you add the leaves to the water before the root powder or after?” Yasashi asked as she kept an eye on the stove.

“Um, it says to boil the leaves before adding the power, so once the water is boiling the leaves are to be added,” Niro deduced.

“Alright, I will watch the water for you while you grind the roots,” Yasashi added as she filled a pot with water and placed it on the stove.

“Thanks Yasa chan,” Niro stated as he began to grind down the roots.

Once everything was in the water, it was just a matter of waiting. “Does cooking have waiting like this?” Niro asked as he sat down at the kitchen table.

“It depends on what you make I guess. Like you have to wait for a cake to bake or for meat to cook,” Yasashi explained.

“That makes sense, but what does waiting have to be so boring?” Niro asked.

Yasashi giggled at his comment, “you don’t have to sit still while you wait silly,” she stated.

“I know that,” Niro muttered as he stood up.

As he went to check the water, the back door opened.

Theresa had returned, though her expression was unreadable, “Niro, why does my kitchen smell so weird?” she asked.

“Uh. . . it must be the roots?” Niro suggested.

“Well, it better not stink up the rest my house,” Theresa stated.

Behind her, an older man walked into the kitchen, “Who’s cookin’ skunk?” he asked.

Theresa placed her hand on her forehead as the two children started to laugh.

Niro doesn't cook... ask anyone.
